What Does perish mean?

The word “perish” is one of the most important words in the entire Bible.  Why?

Because it is in John 3:16, which is the most well known verse in the Bible, and it says:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Since most of humanity is lost and without Christ – therefore this word “perish”

is the fate of most of adult humanity.

So what does perish actually  mean?

To put it simply – the word perish means something that is “destroyed”.  It is “Apollumi” in Greek (John wrote in Greek) and is translated many times as the word “destroy” in the New Testament.

It does not mean to be preserved alive for eternity in torture.

Let me strongly encourage you to read the articles and links below.  This is a position that a growing number of evangelicals, like myself, hold to.

A very brief summary:

The fate of the lost is being “destroyed” in hell, body and soul, not preserved.  This is called “Conditional Immortality” meaning only the saved gain immortality. The lost are not immortal and can be destroyed, turned to ashes (2 Peter 2:6), no longer existing. There are many evangelical websites on this topic already out there.  You can Google the term or see links below.

Note: this is NOT saying that hell does not exist.  It most certainly does.

This is just explaining the wrong view of hell that many Christians hold to.  Here is the proper view:

It is exactly what Jesus said the fate of the lost will be:

“Rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” – Matthew 10:28

Before you can knee-jerk react to this – let me challenge you.

Please read the articles below and also the links below.  They will clarify many of your objections by looking at the Biblical text.

What is conditional immortality?

Are all souls born already immortal?

Are you saying there is no punishment for the unsaved?

Why rarely cited Isaiah 66:24 is the key

Doesn't Daniel 12:2 say some will face everlasting contempt?

Why the 'Book of Life" is exactly that, a book of life.
